Our Story...

My name is Kareemah & I am the youngest of Inez A.’s six grandchildren. In 2014, I accepted the task of taking my grandparents (granddaddy was visually impaired) to the bank. I could not know it then, but this was a true turning point for all of us. Prior to that gloomy Saturday, my grandparents had never asked for much help…

After pleading with Madear, as we called my grandmother, to leave the house (which took 2 hours btw), my normally independent, strong, & resilient grandmother's secret was slowly being revealed. She was suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer’s. As a close family, we all leapt into action! I set them up for online banking to cover their monthly bills, my sibling & cousin called & visited more frequently, while my mother & uncle became their primary caregivers. Despite all of this, there were unforeseen barriers. Among these; both my mother & uncle were in their early 70’s & my uncle lived out of state!

Our grandparents lived in this house for over 60 years. In the space, our grandparents hosted family gatherings, weddings, street club meetings, teen gatherings, and anniversary parties to name just a few. They also provided temporary housing for college students and single men that were in need of affordable housing.

To honor our grandparent’s legacy of faith, family, community, and ownership, the offspring of the late Mathew and Inez, founded Inez Place to continue to provide a family-like space for individuals or groups to come out, laugh, learn, heal, work, or just relax.
